The meteoric rise of U.S. men’s national team star Alex Freeman has sparked massive excitement among American soccer supporters and brought his famous father, former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Antonio Freeman, to tears. Antonio openly shared his emotional response when asked about the pivotal role his son has played during America’s current World Cup campaign.
Speaking to Fox Sports ahead of the U.S. vs. Turkey match, the elder Freeman paused to collect his emotions, noting how blessed he feels to be present and to serve as a father to Alex. He expressed genuine awe at the national outpouring of support for the right back, comparing it to his own playing days. While Antonio once enjoyed the backing of Packers fans, he noted that his son now has the support of all 50 states.
As the United States had already secured the top position in their group, manager Mauricio Pochettino opted to keep Alex on the bench and give him some rest for the Turkey game. This follows a breakout performance in the tournament for the 21-year-old, which included a spectacular, electrifying goal during America’s major win against Australia last week.
When questioned about who holds the title of the family’s best athlete, the former NFL pass-catcher insisted that the accolade belongs to his son. Antonio told the “FIFA World Cup on Fox After Hours with James Corden” on Sunday that Alex stands 6-foot-4, joking that if he possessed such height, along with his son’s long arms and legs, he would have been completely unstoppable in the NFL. He emphasized that at 21, Alex is just beginning, and he anticipates his son will become the best athlete and likely the wealthiest member of their family. In a playful retort, Alex suggested that his father is not nearly as complimentary when they are off camera.
The elder Freeman admitted that he was initially disappointed when his son expressed a lack of interest in pursuing basketball or American football. However, he now hopes his experience serves as a lesson for other parents to support their children’s chosen endeavors. Recalling his initial reaction to Alex’s commitment to soccer, he noted that he overdramatized his disappointment, but quickly realized he needed to get on board. He observed how the young man sacrificed birthdays and holidays to train while peers spent time at the beach, proving his deep focus and dedication to his professional goals.
Globally, Alex is recognized for his club soccer play with Villarreal CF in Spain, but he gained significant attention on the TikTok platform as “Diamond’s Little Brother.” This moniker arrived after his stepsister, Diamond Spaulding, went viral by urging the public to rally behind Alex and his teammates. The USMNT eventually adopted the phrase, turning it into a movement. Spaulding, a 29-year-old nursing student and the daughter of Antonio’s partner, told NBC News she had no doubt Alex would thrive under pressure, noting that he consistently “shows out” when he knows the entire nation is supporting him.
