In an escalation of regional tensions, Iran launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Sunday targeting Bahrain and Kuwait. The strikes came as a direct retaliation to U.S. airstrikes that hit Iranian soil, with Tehran warning that any further American military actions could lead to a permanent end to ongoing negotiations aimed at finalizing a war-ending ceasefire.
The current cycle of violence stems from disagreements over control of the Strait of Hormuz. A multinational maritime coalition led by the U.S. Navy announced plans to expand shipping routes near Oman to bypass Iranian oversight, creating a new point of friction. Despite the strait being situated in both Iranian and Omani waters, the global community views it as an international passage. Tehran, which demands exclusive governing authority over the narrow waterway, has recently attacked multiple vessels navigating the Omani-side route.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking during a state visit to Baghdad, dismissed any outside attempts to manage the strait. He argued that foreign interference only complicates the reopening of the vital oil and gas transit corridor and exacerbates confrontations in the region. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Iran remain engaged in delicate discussions regarding an interim peace deal, which covers the status of the strait, the lifting of sanctions, and the management of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. Under a memorandum signed earlier this month, the two nations have 60 days to resolve these issues, though the latest exchange of fire threatens to derail the agreement entirely.
In Kuwait, military officials reported the interception of two incoming ballistic missiles on Sunday morning, with no resulting injuries or infrastructure damage. Kuwait remains a strategic partner, hosting a major U.S. army base. In Bahrain, where the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet is stationed, the Interior Ministry confirmed that an Iranian strike hit a residential building near the international airport. While the structure was significantly damaged—with photos showing a top floor reduced to rubble—there were no fatalities reported. Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as a deliberate pattern of aggression against the kingdom’s sovereignty.
The U.S. Central Command confirmed it conducted airstrikes on Sunday against Iranian surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, and drone storage sites. This action followed an earlier attack on Saturday against the Panamanian-flagged tanker Kiku, which was transporting crude oil for Qatar. Former President Donald Trump commented on social media that the U.S. had targeted these sites for violations of the ceasefire, warning that Washington may eventually be forced to complete the military objective if Iran does not return to a reasonable stance. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the retaliatory attacks, reiterating that any violation of the ceasefire would result in a total halt of all diplomatic processes.
