A notable transition is approaching for Social Security recipients who receive their benefits via a Direct Express prepaid debit card. While over 99% of the 70.6 million Americans collecting Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits utilize electronic payment methods—such as direct deposit or prepaid cards—the Social Security Administration (SSA) is working toward a goal of moving all beneficiaries to electronic payments by the conclusion of this year.
For those currently utilizing Direct Express cards, the Treasury Department has announced a transition in the financial institution managing the program. According to a notice issued by the SSA on May 18, Fifth Third Bank is slated to take over for Comerica Bank as the official financial agent for the Direct Express platform.
The SSA reports that individuals newly enrolling in the Direct Express program are already receiving cards issued by Fifth Third Bank. The migration for the estimated 3.6 million existing cardholders, as noted by The Motley Fool, is scheduled to commence later in 2026 or early next year. The Treasury Department plans to distribute new Fifth Third Bank-issued cards to current holders throughout the coming months, with the transition occurring as existing Comerica cards reach their expiration dates.
The agency has assured beneficiaries that they will receive notification prior to the arrival of their new cards. In the interim, current cards will remain fully operational, and the distribution of benefits will continue on the established schedule without interruption. The new cards are expected to function in the same manner as the current ones.
In preparation for this transition, officials recommend that beneficiaries verify their personal records. Kailey Hagen, a contributing retirement analyst at The Motley Fool, suggests that recipients who have changed addresses recently should ensure the Social Security Administration has their current contact information to guarantee the new debit card is delivered to the correct location. Maintaining updated contact details is essential for all beneficiaries to ensure they receive all necessary correspondence from the SSA.
