Sweden’s Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari recently attended a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg accompanied by her three-month-old son, Adam. By carrying her baby in a sling and arriving with an aide pushing a pram, the 30-year-old minister made a statement about challenging traditional conventions surrounding the intersection of motherhood and professional life.

Pourmokhtari expressed her pride in being a living example that women do not need to sacrifice one role for the other, stating that it is indeed possible to be both a present minister and a present mother. While speaking to reporters with her son resting on her chest, she remarked on the wonderful nature of Europe, noting that the ability to attend important political meetings while simultaneously caring for her child is a testament to progress.

During the event, her French colleague Monique Barbut offered a warm gesture by presenting the minister with a baby gift. According to EU officials, this incident is believed to mark the first time a baby has been brought into one of the bloc’s formal ministerial meetings.

The move highlights ongoing discussions regarding the difficulties women face in balancing career responsibilities and childcare. Research frequently indicates that mothers often suffer from lost career opportunities, lower earnings, and fewer promotions following childbirth. Recognizing these struggles, the European Parliament has recently adjusted its internal policies to permit new mothers the right to cast votes by proxy.

Pourmokhtari is not the first high-profile political figure to draw attention to the challenges of maternity in the public eye. In 2018, former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern garnered significant praise for taking her three-month-old daughter, Neve, to the United Nations General Assembly, marking the first time a baby had appeared in such a capacity in the organization’s history. Furthermore, in 2017, Larissa Waters became the first woman to nurse an infant in the Australian parliament. These moments follow a legacy established by figures like Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto, who in 1990 became the first prime minister to give birth while in office, with Ardern remaining one of the only other leaders to do so.
