This reduction would impact 15% of the company’s total workforce across the globe. According to information published Friday by the German business magazine Manager Magazin, the proposed layoffs would coincide with the closure of four manufacturing facilities in Germany and a 15% reduction in overall investment spending through the next five years.

The same report indicated that the company, which stands as Germany’s largest automaker and a primary employer, intends to separate its core Volkswagen brand and its auto parts division into distinct corporate entities. Beyond its flagship brand, the company maintains ownership of major automotive names, including Porsche and Audi. When approached by CNN regarding these internal documents, a company spokesperson declined to provide a comment, stating only that matters will be addressed through the appropriate committees and that they would not get ahead of that formal process.

Volkswagen currently maintains a global workforce of approximately 660,000 people and had previously disclosed intentions to remove 50,000 positions in Germany by 2030. In the United States, the firm operates one assembly plant located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which employs over 4,000 people. Like various other European manufacturers, Volkswagen is currently facing significant pressure from new tariffs on exports to the U.S. and is struggling to compete with the rapid growth of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, most notably BYD.

Explaining the shift in strategy, the Volkswagen spokesperson noted that the company requires a sharper focus and stricter financial discipline regarding costs and investments to survive its current reality. They added that the brand’s long-standing business model, which relied on manufacturing vehicles in Europe for global export, is no longer functional for all of its brands. Meanwhile, any attempt to reduce the workforce is expected to face heavy opposition from German labor unions. Representatives from the union IG Metall and the General Works Council released a joint statement on Friday, vowing to prevent such plans with all their might if they are officially moved forward. Following the news, Volkswagen shares saw a 1.5% decline in early afternoon trading, continuing a downward trend that has seen the stock price fall by more than 25% this year.

German automaker Volkswagen is reportedly planning to eliminate 100,000 jobs as part of a significant cost-cutting initiative that includes closing four domestic factories.

[90
907,230,50,906,908,905
post-1146","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-automotive-industry","tag-economy","tag-germany","tag-job-cuts","tag-layoffs","tag-volkswagen
["GET
