Amidst the rising global temperatures and increasing instances of extreme weather, a recurring debate has surfaced on social media, with some users questioning whether sunscreen products might actually contribute to skin cancer risks rather than preventing them.

A specific claim circulating online alleges that, according to the National Cancer Institute, melanoma rates have surged by more than 200% since sunscreen was first introduced in the 1940s. Some social media posts even characterize these products as harmful substances that block the body’s natural sunlight absorption. However, multiple studies consistently demonstrate that regular application of sunscreen effectively lowers the risk of developing melanoma.

Brittany Schaefer, a public information officer for the Connecticut State Department of Public Health, noted that there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that sunscreen use is associated with a higher risk of developing cancer. This finding aligns with previous fact-checking efforts that debunked the false assumption that regions with the highest sunscreen consumption also experience the highest rates of skin cancer.

Regarding the statistical claims, the US National Cancer Institute has not reported that sunscreen caused a 200% rise in melanoma since the 1940s. Reliable data regarding newly observed cases of melanoma only dates back to 1975. While statistics do show that the rate of newly diagnosed melanoma cases increased by over 220% between 1975 and 2023, there is absolutely no evidence linking this upward trend to the use of sunscreen.

A 2023 collaborative study involving experts from the United States, Germany, Switzerland, and Hungary examined potential reasons for the rise in cases. Despite the consensus among health experts, public surveys reveal a gap in usage. In 2024, 51% of respondents in Germany stated they only apply sunscreen during the summer or when in direct sunlight, while 17% admitted to never using it. Similarly, a 2024 poll in the United States found that 33% of adults never use sunscreen at all. The US Food and Drug Administration, which oversees the safety and efficacy of these products, continues to recommend the regular use of sunscreen, even on overcast days.

As temperatures soar across Europe, online myths questioning the safety of sunscreen have gained traction.
