Last week, Guinness World Records confirmed that the 58-year-old Canberra resident set a new record for the loudest shout ever recorded by an individual, hitting 122.4 decibels after yelling the word “now.”

This achievement surpassed the previous long-standing record of 121.7 decibels, which was set in 1994 by Annalisa Flanagan, a schoolteacher from Northern Ireland who shouted the word “quiet.” The volume produced by McGrail-Bateup is comparable to the intense noise of a chainsaw, an ambulance siren at a close distance, or a jet aircraft during takeoff.

Speaking on Tuesday, McGrail-Bateup noted that the record attempt was not something that could be formally trained for. He explained that one has to save their energy for the actual day of the attempt. He described the process as physically demanding, noting that it took seven attempts just to yell that single word, leaving his voice raspy and hoarse for several days afterward. Despite the strain, he remarked that the experience was quite enjoyable.

McGrail-Bateup identifies specifically as the world’s loudest male, noting that since there was no previous record for a man, he is pleased that Flanagan retains her title as the loudest woman in the world. He discovered the record while searching for town crying achievements on the Guinness website. His interest in competitive volume began in 2017 after he was appointed as the honorary, part-time town crier of Canberra, a role he refers to as a bit of fun.

As part of the Ancient and Honorable Guild of Australian Town Criers, he performs at various community gatherings and school events. In 2024, he won a guild competition with a 98-decibel proclamation. For his world record attempt on May 2, he experimented with different words before choosing “now.” The shout was captured in a Canberra radio studio by a professional acoustic engineer in the presence of witnesses, with the evidence subsequently submitted to Guinness.

This is the second world record for McGrail-Bateup, who previously held a speed record in 2019 for archery after shooting 10 arrows in 60.03 seconds. However, that record was broken nine months later by a 7-year-old child. McGrail-Bateup remains humble about his latest achievement, stating that if someone manages to beat his record in the future, he would find that fantastic because he believes records are ultimately meant to be broken.

An Australian air conditioner technician and town crier has secured a world record for the loudest shout, reaching a noise level comparable to a jet engine.

[93
196,194,195,198,197
post-651","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world","tag-canberra","tag-guinness-world-records","tag-joseph-mcgrail-bateup","tag-town-crier","tag-world-record
["GET
