However, the event has not had a smooth start, grappling with issues such as power outages and melting ice cream, alongside a lack of representation from several states that opted out of participating.

Organizers had assured that all parts of the nation would be represented at the 16-day event. Despite this, a minimum of 10 states and territories declined to send delegations, with many pointing to the expense of sending staff as the primary reason for their refusal.

Booths representing Connecticut, Oregon, Washington, Maine, Alaska, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were sparsely furnished, featuring only backdrops, chairs, or carpets. In contrast, other states invested heavily in their displays for the semiquincentennial celebration. The Texas booth offered visitors photo opportunities with a replica of the Alamo, an interactive exhibit for the “Austin City Limits” music series, and a chance to sit inside a spaceship. The Nevada booth adopted a Las Vegas theme, while California’s booth included a raffle for a free vacation.

USA TODAY observed the fair on Friday, June 26, noting various aspects and gathering attendee feedback. William Connor, 49, from Eldersburg, Maryland, expressed surprise at the states that chose not to participate. “Celebrating 250 years only happens once, so they kind of missed out,” he commented. “If they came and saw what it was like here, it’s not like it’s a Trump festival, it’s basically celebrating America.”

Although Massachusetts did not send official staff, Donna, a 72-year-old retired teacher from Western Massachusetts who preferred to be identified only by her first name, took initiative. She drove nine hours to volunteer at her state’s booth, bringing maple syrup and coloring books from the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association. She stated she is the sole volunteer from her state and works approximately 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, deciding, “Wow, I could just go there myself.”

Beyond the empty booths, the fair has been plagued by electrical problems. On Thursday, June 25, attendees reported generator issues that caused the Ferris wheel, a major attraction, to halt operations for about two hours. The following day, food hall workers were still awaiting an ice cream shipment after their entire stock had melted due to persistent electrical problems. Some food items, such as boneless wings, were also unavailable during part of the lunch service.

Additional attractions were also out of service on Friday. West Virginia’s booth, which featured a driving simulator combining driving skill and singing performance of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” was closed due to air conditioning malfunctions. Several screens within a National Geographic display were also not functioning.

Despite these ongoing issues, the limited number of visitors found entertainment in interactive exhibits, including dressing up as George Washington or interacting with an actress portraying Betsy Ross. A temporary Budweiser bar provided a respite for attendees seeking to escape the Washington summer heat.

Michelle Catan, along with her husband Paul, in their 60s, traveled from Oneonta, New York, to Washington D.C. for what they described as a “once in a lifetime event.” The couple, who married in Las Vegas in 1998, enjoyed taking a photo with a replica of the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign at the Nevada booth. “I love going to each of these states and seeing what they have,” Michelle Catan shared. “We’re very blessed to live in this country.”

Attendees had less time than anticipated to explore each state’s offerings on Friday, as the fair closed several hours early due to rain.

The Great American State Fair, launched on the National Mall to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary, has encountered early challenges.
