This decision follows a revision of license requirements after the government had previously issued an export block earlier this month due to national security concerns.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick addressed the company in a letter dated Friday, noting that since the export restriction was imposed in June, Anthropic has collaborated with federal officials to mitigate risks associated with the protected models. Lutnick stated that, based on the progress made in these efforts, he has determined that the necessary safeguards are now in place to allow specific trusted partners to utilize the Claude Mythos 5 Model.

It is important to note that the government’s current authorization does not extend to the release of Fable, which is a less powerful iteration of the Mythos technology. Anthropic released a statement acknowledging the notice, confirming that their most advanced cybersecurity model, Mythos 5, can now be redeployed to a limited group of infrastructure providers and cyber defenders. The company stated they are currently working to provision these approved providers and restore their access to Mythos 5 as quickly as possible. Anthropic added that they remain pleased with this progress and are continuing to engage with the government to eventually expand Mythos 5 access and re-release Fable 5 for general availability.

A source familiar with the situation informed CNN that discussions between the government and Anthropic are expected to proceed through the weekend, with a primary objective of restoring access to the Fable model as well. Earlier in June, Anthropic had suspended access to both Mythos and Fable to adhere to federal orders that prohibited use by foreign nationals, a mandate that initially included the company’s own staff.

This sequence of events highlights the ongoing challenges regarding the lack of a comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, even as the sector undergoes rapid development and the US competes with nations like China. The permission for the Mythos release was first reported by Semafor. While the Trump administration has historically maintained a hands-off regulatory approach to prioritize US competitiveness, the recent scrutiny of Anthropic and requests for OpenAI to limit its newest models reflect growing concerns among experts that such high-level AI could be exploited by hackers to identify system vulnerabilities at record speeds.

The federal government has experienced previous friction in its relationship with Anthropic, including an earlier designation of the company as a “supply chain risk” over disagreements regarding military applications of its technology. Anthropic has since filed a lawsuit challenging that designation and has already achieved an initial procedural victory in the matter.

Following an export block earlier this month, the US government has permitted Anthropic to grant select companies access to its Mythos 5 AI model.

[11
665,667,668,666,669
post-953","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics","tag-anthropic","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-cybersecurity","tag-mythos-ai","tag-us-government
["GET
