United States President Donald Trump offered strong commendations for Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, describing the Ukrainian president as a courageous leader who is performing well amid the ongoing conflict against Russia. During a White House briefing held alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, President Trump remarked that regardless of one’s perspective, Zelenskyy is effectively holding his ground.

While acknowledging the heavy loss of life on both sides of the front lines, Trump maintained that the Ukrainian leader is managing the war effort successfully. He highlighted that Zelenskyy is backed by high-quality personnel, skilled fighters, and advanced military equipment. These comments arrive as Kyiv actively attempts to isolate the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula by targeting critical transport links and energy infrastructure.

Ukraine’s defence minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, noted in a recent interview that these operations aim to effectively turn Crimea into an island. He suggested that the systematic disruption of logistics could result in significant and unexpected challenges for Russian forces. Ukrainian strikes have already triggered a severe fuel shortage across the territory, leading to long queues at gas stations.

President Zelenskyy indicated that Russian military command is currently reallocating air defence resources to protect the Crimean Bridge, a vital transit route connecting the peninsula to mainland territory held by Moscow. The Security Service of Ukraine reported success in recent operations, including strikes on airfields and anti-aircraft systems. Specifically, they claimed to have destroyed four aircraft hangars at Saky airfield, as well as components of an S-400 system and two Pantsir-S1 units near Kerch.

Amid these developments, Zelenskyy has been in discussions with Mark Rutte and leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom regarding the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defence capabilities. During these meetings, Rutte and the E5 representatives reiterated their commitment to long-term support for Kyiv, emphasizing their goal to ensure Ukraine remains capable of defending itself, gaining leverage at the negotiating table, and maintaining a path toward eventual NATO integration.
