The Iranian national football team has navigated an exceptionally challenging path throughout the 2026 World Cup, contending with significant obstacles that have little to do with their actual performance on the field. The difficulties stem largely from external circumstances that have hindered their preparation and movement.

Team captain Mehdi Taremi expressed the team’s frustration following a 1-1 draw against Egypt on Friday, a result that leaves their potential advancement to the knockout stage in uncertainty. Taremi noted that the squad feels they are fighting against every possible barrier, citing persistent travel complications and denied visas for key support staff.

Beyond travel issues, the team was forced to relocate their base camp at the last minute. Furthermore, the squad has faced officiating frustration after a potential game-winning goal was overturned by VAR for the second match in a row. Taremi recalled that FIFA president Gianni Infantino had visited the locker room before their opening match against New Zealand, suggesting that their early struggles were merely the start of the tournament’s difficulties.

Due to geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States, the team was required to move their base of operations from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, placing them hundreds of miles away from the cities of Los Angeles and Seattle where they competed in group-stage games. The restrictions were severe, with the team and staff permitted entry to the U.S. only 24 hours before their first two games and 48 hours before the final group match in Seattle. Several staff members were unable to obtain visas at all.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei criticized the treatment of his squad, stating that the host nation acted unfairly. He explained that the team had hoped to arrive two days early to ensure proper recovery and physical readiness, but were denied the opportunity to do so, which negatively impacted both their physical and mental state. Having finished third in Group G with three points after three consecutive draws, Iran must now wait for the conclusion of other group-stage matches to determine if they qualify as one of the top eight third-place teams.

Taremi emphasized the added pressure of having to travel back to Tijuana immediately following their final match, noting that the lack of recovery time would be a massive disadvantage if they manage to advance. Meanwhile, 36-year-old defender Ramin Rezaeian offered a more tempered perspective on the situation. While he expressed a reluctance to complain, he highlighted his desire to secure success for the people of Iran, stating that they deserve happiness and more than what the team has been able to provide under these constrained circumstances.
