MEPs Clash Over Brexit Legacy and UK’s Potential EU Return

A decade has passed since the United Kingdom moved to depart from the European Union, yet the conversation regarding the consequences of Brexit remains highly active. European Parliament members Barry Andrews, representing Renew Europe, and Sander Smit, from the European Conservatives & Reformists, engaged in a vigorous discussion regarding whether the exit has served to bolster or undermine the continent, as well as the feasibility or necessity of Britain eventually rejoining the bloc.

For Irish politician Barry Andrews, the situation appears definitive. He maintains that the decision to exit was a strategic error, describing the move as a “total disaster” for the UK. He highlights the prolonged period of economic hurdles and political volatility that has followed the referendum. Furthermore, he asserts that the Brexit process has actually bolstered unity behind the European project, noting that at this stage, no one seems interested in exiting the European Union.

Conversely, Dutch MEP Sander Smit offers a different perspective, noting that the EU continues to lack the significant influence the UK once provided regarding financial and fiscal responsibility. Expressing caution about the movement toward a more centralized Europe, he advocated for a different approach. Smit emphasized that the path forward involves a robust partnership, suggesting that both the UK and EU member states should move beyond their shared history to cooperate as natural, sovereign allies.
