Pete Buttigieg Says False Report Triggered Children Services Visit

Transportation Secretary and Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg revealed this week that his family life was severely disrupted by a malicious hoax. An anonymous individual contacted Michigan Children’s Protective Services, falsely claiming that Buttigieg’s four-year-old twins were in danger.

Writing in a Substack post on June 26, Buttigieg expressed his disbelief that someone would manipulate the system to target his family with a fabricated and easily disproven accusation regarding a horrific crime. He described the experience of having a police officer and a children’s services worker arrive at his Michigan home as deeply distressing, noting that officials initially withheld details, requiring the children to undergo private forensic interviews the following day.

Buttigieg described those twenty-four hours leading up to the interviews as some of the most difficult of his life, characterizing the event as the most unpleasant experience he has endured during his public service career. After the interviews, he and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, learned that the caller had claimed to speak with a woman who purportedly met Buttigieg at an Alabama conference years ago, where he allegedly confessed to committing violent crimes. Buttigieg clarified to the investigating officer that he had never visited the specific town in Alabama mentioned in the report.

The officer ultimately concluded that the report appeared to be politically motivated and indicated that the case would not be forwarded to a prosecutor. Furthermore, the forensic interviews conducted by trained personnel showed no cause for concern. The Michigan State Police confirmed that they received an anonymous report, collaborated with Child Protective Services to investigate it, and officially determined the claims to be false. The agency emphasized that such false reports are dangerous, as they divert vital law enforcement and social work resources away from legitimate emergencies.

This incident occurs amidst a period of rising anxiety regarding political violence, following similar “swatting” attempts against Indiana lawmakers. While the allegations against the Buttigieg family were fully unsubstantiated, the Secretary noted that the ordeal has left his family shaken. He concluded his post by stating that even though the accusations were absurd and promptly dismissed by law enforcement, he remains concerned about the impact of such actions, asserting that political differences should never lead to targeting a person’s children.
